There are currently three courses. Learn about the career and the career tracks, submit a strong application, and write compelling personal narratives.
The members of Compass are at the heart of the community. We're all driven to become Foreign Service Officers, Compass provides the space to share, learn, and prepare with one another.
A "library" of ever expanding resources on the Foreign Service and the application process.
The best way to prepare for the FSOT, is to practice the test questions. Compass includes practice tests on the Job Knowledge, English Expression, and Essay sections. The best part, the tests simulate the actual experience.
More of a verbal person? Call into the monthly member calls. A great opportunity to speak with other community members on all things Foreign Service.

Got questions?
Why use FSO Compass when I could just ask myself questions?
Very true. You could just ask yourself questions you find on the internet, from a study guide, or from your head, but then you are limited. The practice tests closely replicate the FSOT.
For the Job Knowledge section this includes a countdown clock, 60 questions that are asked one at a time (so no accidental cheating by looking ahead), the type of questions asked (there are multiple knowledge areas from economics, to geography, to US Culture, and more), and an âanswer laterâ function. There is nothing else online or offline that has as many functions. Further, the goal of the practice test is to prepare you to take the test as best as possible. This is a great resource to help you accomplish that. The English Expression section is similar.
Likewise, for the Essay practice tests you are provided with either three prompts or one prompt, and are limited to no more than 30 minutes to write. The prompts appear and the timer starts at the same time. This is the best way to practice for an unknown prompt, and to make sure you keep to the time and the character limit.
Are the practice test questions former FSOT questions?
The tests and questions are made for FSO Compass. They are meant to be similar to the scope, the number, and the type of area questions asked by the actual test. The practice tests keep to the principles and stipulations laid out in the Non-Disclosure Agreement. To the best of our ability and knowledge, non of the questions are from former FSOT questions.
